Magento 2.4 Compatibility Matrix: PHP, OpenSearch, Valkey and More

By Simon Bumford, Founder of EveryHostLast updated 5 min read

Magento 2.4.9, the latest release, requires PHP 8.5, Composer 2.10, MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 12.3, OpenSearch 3, Valkey 9, Varnish 8, RabbitMQ 4.3 or ActiveMQ Artemis 2, and nginx 1.30, according to Adobe's on-premises system requirements. Earlier release lines need different versions, and the table below sets them out for the latest patch of each line from 2.4.4 to 2.4.9, followed by Mage-OS. Every value is Adobe's or Mage-OS's own requirement, checked on 13 October 2026.

    The Magento 2.4 compatibility matrix

Adobe's on-premises requirements for the latest patch of each release line. "Not supported" is Adobe's own wording; "Not listed" means Adobe's table has no row for that component in that column.

Two notes from Adobe sit under the table:

    • MySQL 8.0 reached end of support on 30 April 2026. Magento 2.4.7, 2.4.6, 2.4.5 and 2.4.4 don't support MySQL versions released after 8.0, and Adobe strongly recommends moving those stores to a compatible MariaDB version.
    • Elasticsearch 7.17 reached end of support on 15 January 2026. Magento 2.4.6, 2.4.5 and 2.4.4 don't support Elasticsearch versions released after 7, and Adobe strongly recommends moving to a compatible OpenSearch version.

Apache has no row in Adobe's current on-premises tables; nginx is the web server Adobe lists.

    Mage-OS compatibility

Mage-OS publishes its own requirements. Mage-OS 3.x is built on Magento Open Source 2.4.9; Mage-OS 2.x was built on 2.4.8-p5, and 2.3.0 is its last planned release. Mage-OS says it patches the latest release branch only.

    ComponentMage-OS 3.5.0 (minimum)Mage-OS 3.5.0 (recommended)
    PHP8.38.5
    Composer2.10.22.10.2

    RabbitMQ (optional)4.04.1
    Varnish7.x7.7

Mage-OS also lists Elasticsearch 8.x as a "legacy option". More on how Mage-OS relates to Magento in What is Mage-OS?

    Reading the matrix

    • Requirements are per patch, not per line. The table shows the latest patch of each line. Older patches of the same line can have different requirements, which Adobe lists in its "earlier releases" tables.
    • Upgrade to the latest patch first. Many cells changed in recent patches, for example Valkey replacing Redis. If your store is several patches behind, the matrix for your exact patch may look quite different.
    • On-premises and Cloud differ. Adobe publishes a separate table for Adobe Commerce on Cloud, with different rows. This matrix is the on-premises one, which applies to self-managed hosting.
    • A supported version is not the same as a supported release. For how long Adobe supports each release line, see Magento end of life.

What the matrix means for upgrades

An upgrade usually means changing several services, not just Magento. Moving from 2.4.7 to 2.4.9, for example, means PHP 8.3 to 8.5, MariaDB 10.11 or 11.8 to 12.3, or a move to MySQL 8.4, OpenSearch 3 and Valkey 9. Plan those changes on a staging copy, in an order the old and new versions can both live with. See Magento upgrades and security patching and our guide to the Magento 2.4.9 upgrade. For the 2.4.9 list on its own, see Magento 2.4.9 hosting requirements, and for a server checklist, Magento 2 prerequisites.

    OpenSearch vs Elasticsearch

Magento 2.4.9 supports OpenSearch 3 only; on earlier lines, Elasticsearch is either deprecated or no longer supported.

Adobe's 2.4.8 release notes say Magento is now optimised for OpenSearch and that "All Elasticsearch 7 and 8 modules and classes are now deprecated in the codebase". The on-premises table still lists Elasticsearch 8 for 2.4.8-p5 and 2.4.7-p10, so those stores can run it today, but it is on its way out. For 2.4.6 and older, Adobe lists Elasticsearch as not supported and recommends OpenSearch. More in Redis and OpenSearch for Magento.

    Redis vs Valkey

Current Magento releases use Valkey for the cache; only the latest 2.4.4 patch still lists Redis.

Adobe's Valkey documentation says Valkey is required for cache configuration on Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 and on the patch releases later than 2.4.5-p16, 2.4.6-p14, 2.4.7-p9 and 2.4.8-p4. That is why the matrix shows Valkey 8.1 for those lines and Valkey 9 for 2.4.9, and "Not supported" against Redis. From 2.4.9, Magento's own setup commands use Valkey names too. See Valkey for Magento.

How we match each server's stack to your store

We don't run one fixed set of versions. Each EveryHost server is built with the PHP, database, search, cache, Varnish and message queue versions that your store's Magento release supports, in our London data centre, and we change them as your store is upgraded. If you're planning an upgrade, we can line up the server side on a staging copy first. See plans and prices.

    Frequently asked questions

PHP 8.5. Adobe's on-premises requirements list PHP 8.5 only for Magento 2.4.9. The latest 2.4.8 patch supports PHP 8.4 and 8.3, and the latest 2.4.7 patch PHP 8.3 and 8.2.

Only just. Adobe's on-premises table lists Elasticsearch 8 for 2.4.8-p5, but the 2.4.8 release notes say all Elasticsearch 7 and 8 modules are deprecated. Magento 2.4.9 supports OpenSearch 3 only, so plan a move to OpenSearch.

On current releases, none: Adobe requires Valkey for the cache on 2.4.9 and on the patches after 2.4.5-p16, 2.4.6-p14, 2.4.7-p9 and 2.4.8-p4. The latest 2.4.4 patch still lists Redis 7.2. Magento 2.4.9 lists Valkey 9, and the latest patches of 2.4.5 to 2.4.8 list Valkey 8.1.

Magento 2.4.9 and 2.4.8-p5 support MySQL 8.4. For the latest patches of 2.4.4 to 2.4.7, Adobe lists MySQL as not supported, because MySQL 8.0 reached end of support on 30 April 2026, and recommends a compatible MariaDB version instead.

Mage-OS publishes its own requirements. For Mage-OS 3.5.0, built on Magento Open Source 2.4.9, it lists PHP 8.3 minimum and 8.5 recommended, MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 11.4 minimum, OpenSearch 2 minimum and 3 recommended, and Valkey 8.0 recommended.
